Obituary for Alexander J. Smith Jr.

Alexander J. Smith Jr., loving husband of the recently deceased Barbara (Rawding) Smith, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in Norwood. He was 88 years old.

Alexander was born in Richmond, VA in 1931 but spent most of his life in Massachusetts. He attended classes at Needham High School, graduating with then class of 1949. He then continued his education at Northeastern University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1958.

From 1952 until 1954 he distinguished himself with service to his country; serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

For 30 years, Alexander worked as a Product Manager for William Carter Co. in Needham; the manufacturer of Children’s clothes. And, his two sons were test babies for the clothing line. Later, before full retirement, he worked as a custodian for the Medfield Public School system.

Alexander was a long-standing member, and past Master, of the Norfolk Lodge of the Masons in Needham, and later was a member of the Charles River Lodge in Medway. He also was a member of the Acacia Club, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and was a Shriner of the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington MA. As well as these community activities, he served as a Deacon at Medfield’s United Church of Christ.

Alexander was devoted father of Charles A. Smith and his wife Jacqueline of Wrentham, and Robert S. Smith of Foxborough. He was the son of the late Alexander J. and Margaret (Grieve) Smith and was the brother of the late Robert S. Smith of Florida.

Although services for Alexander will remain private, the family would appreciate memorial contributions in his name to The Lank Cancer Center, 148 Chestnut St. Needham, MA 02492.
