Obituary for Anthony "Tony" Calo
Anthony “Tony” Calo died on Friday June 28, 2019 at his home on Green Street surrounded by his loving Family. He was 94.
Born in Everett, MA, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria ( Di orio) Calo who immigrated from Italy. Tony served in the Navy as part of the Seabees during WWII. He was honorably discharged on April 12, 1946 after receiving five medals during his service on a ship in the South Pacific.
After the war in June of 1947 he married the love of his life Mary Frances Cirillo. Their marriage followed his long dialog trying to convince Mary’s parents he was the right guy for her. They remained happily married until his death 72 blissful years later.
In 1957, Tony and Mary moved to Medfield to raise their children. Tony had accepted the position as Steward at Medfield State Hospital. That position of Steward was the start of a 25-year relationship with Medfield State Hospital from which he retired as Acting Superintendent in 1982.
During Tony’s 62 years of living in Medfield he happily served within the town government on the Warrant Committee, the Sign Advisory Board, as the town’s Building Inspector and assisting the town in the development and review of capital expansion programs for the town’s water supply system.
Tony was also an active member of the American Legion, Beckwith Post #110 for many, many, years.
Tony leaves behind his wife Mary (Cirillo) Calo. He was the loving father of Mary Ann McCarthy of Franklin, Virginia Calo, Joseph A Calo and his wife Gay, Linda Stanley and her husband Ron and Patricia Tuccero and her husband Dante all of Medfield. Cherished brother of Anna Dappolonio of W Newbury. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Joseph Calo, sister Virginia Cheslawski and grandson Stephen McCarthy.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday July 9th 10AM at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 133 Spring St., Medfield followed by burial with Military Honors at Vine Lake Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Monday 3-7pm at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home in Medfield.
