Obituary for Barbara L Smith (Rawding)

Barbara L (Rawding) Smith died on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Sunrise of Norwood. She was 85 years old.

Barbara was born in Portsmouth, NH on April 27, 1934 and grew up in Rye, NH. She was very active in 4H growing up, graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1952, and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1956 majoring in home economics. She married Alexander J. Smith, Jr. on October 11, 1959 and they were happily married for almost 60 years.

Barbara was very active in the community. She was a member in good standing at the United Church of Christ in Medfield, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as a state society and national society officer in several functions, was also active in numerous other genealogical societies, and taught sewing and knitting in adult education courses.

Barbara was the beloved wife of Alexander J. Smith and devoted mother of Charles A. Smith and his wife Jacqueline of Wrentham, and Robert S. Smith of Foxborough. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Marion (Philbrick) Rawding of New Hampshire and is survived by her sister Ruth Ham and her husband Fred of North Conway and her brother Robert Rawding and his wife Paula of Rye as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The services will be private, but the family would appreciate memorial contributions in Barbara’s name to The Lank Cancer Center at BID Needham, 148 Chestnut St. Needham MA 02492.
