Obituary for Betty Patterson
Betty Patterson went home to be with the Lord on March 3, 2021 passing away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her caring family. She was 90. She is pre-deceased by her loving husband Jim, James Patterson, who passed away on January 18, 2016. They were married 65 years.
Loving Mother of David and wife Susan Patterson of Chadds Ford, PA; Gail and husband Rawson Cowen of Ridgefield CT; Nanci and husband Philip Ruhoff of Shaker Heights OH; Alan Patterson of Cambridge, MA; Bonnie and husband Stephen Flynn of Plainville MA.
Devoted Grandmother of Brett Patterson, Lauren (Patterson) and husband Larry Park; Sarah Cowen, Blythe Cowen, Emily (Cowen) and husband Paul Masino, Great Grandchild Mason Masino; Hannah Ruhoff; Abigail (Flynn) and husband David Chamberlain, Jacob Flynn, Josiah Flynn, Thomas Flynn, Elizabeth Flynn.
Daughter of the late Thomas and Murdell (Matheson) Morrison. Predeceased by sister Viola (Morrison) Union, Aunt Katherine and Uncle John Morrison, Cousins Eleanor and husband Gordon MacDonald, Millie and husband John Norris, Louise Morrison. Step-Mother Christine Morrison. Survived by sister Marion Morrison; nephews Scott and wife Kaylin Union; Eric and wife Julie Union and many extended relatives.
Born in Boston on May 12, 1930, she grew up in Mattapan mainly raised by her beloved Aunt Katherine. Betty attended Hyde Park High, where she was a member of the girls basketball and bowling teams. She spent much of her time with her family at The First United Presbyterian Church of Boston founded by Scottish highlanders from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She loved Cape Breton where her parents were born and spent many summers there with extended family. Her Scottish/Cape Breton heritage was a source of strength and pride for Betty.
A woman of great faith, the church played a vital role in her life. Betty married her best friend, Jim, at the Newton Presbyterian Church December 16, 1950, where they started a great partnership and continued to live a life of faith. They served many years at the Newton Presbyterian Church and would later attend First Baptist Church of Medfield, Evangelical Baptist Church, Norwood, MA and then found their church home for over 35 years at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Norfolk, MA.
With Jim by her side, she raised their five children and made their home in Medfield, MA in 1957, where she would go on to live for 64 years. Betty played an active role in the community and her children’s lives volunteering to help with Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Betty taught Sunday School and led Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church. She also made life long friends with her neighbors, getting together to play bridge with the ladies of the neighborhood once a month. Betty loved to entertain family and friends; she was always sharing her love of God by embracing others.
Betty was hardworking and started her career in banking back in Boston. When her children were older, she went on to work at Barnes and Jones in Medfield where many of her co-workers became dear friends. In 1980, Betty and Jim established their own business, Eagle Wire Rope. She had a can-do attitude and belief in the American Dream. The business was successfully run until 1994 when they retired.
Betty had a natural zest for life and positive outlook. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing traditional hymns which were a source of comfort to her throughout her life. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing ping pong, cards, and watching the Red Sox on TV. She treasured her relationships with family and found joy in spending time with her children and
grandchildren, always giving unconditional love. Betty had many life long friends and was well loved; she was endeared for her sweet spirit and loving smile. She was truly a conduit of God’s love here on earth and all who knew her were blessed by her presence.
Visiting hours are Saturday March 13, 2021 from 10 am -12pm. Funeral service will follow at 12 pm at Roberts-Mitchell-Caruso Funeral home, 15 Miller Street, Medfield, MA. Burial at Vine Lake Cemetery. All CDC Covid guidelines will be followed. The service will be aired on line for those who are unable to attend in person at https://www.harborview.live/
