Obituary for Edward Allen Schmidt
Edward Allen Schmidt passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday October 29, 2019, after struggling to recover from a second stroke. He was 78 years old.
He was born in Patterson NJ to the late Herbert and Marion Schmidt, and moved around through his childhood. In his teenage years, his family settled in Wellesley, MA, and Edward graduated from Wellesley High School. He studied Engineering at UMASS Amherst, and went on to work at his father’s manufacturing company in Milford, MA called Tempron Products Inc. Upon Herbert’s retirement, Ed and his brother Harold Schmidt took ownership of the company.
Edward met his first wife Laura Slesienski while on leave from the Coast Guard at the New Jersey shore. They were married in Brooklyn NY on October 22, 1966, and soon afterwards settled in Medfield MA.
They had a daughter named Melissa, who in 2nd grade agreed to play soccer. When travel soccer began, Ed volunteered to coach his daughter’s team, thus beginning his long Medfield Soccer Coaching career. He continued to coach the girls’ team through 8th grade, and then helped to develop a Medfield Womens’ soccer team, coaching them for over 20 years. He genuinely loved coaching, supporting and encouraging his female players with their soccer skills and their knowledge of the game.
Edward was also a longtime active member of St Edward’s Parish, from Lay Minister, to teaching CCD and RCIA; from building the altar in the Chapel to running the Thanksgiving Food Drive.
After his first wife Laura passed away in 2009, he did some traveling to Japan and Peru. A few years later he was introduced through mutual friends to Margaret Joseph of Medfield, and the two married on July 4, 2012.
A hardworking and vibrant spirit, Ed loved to watch soccer (occasionally another sport would make it onto the TV, like the Patriots football game), travel, walk in the woods, swim in the pool with his Grandsons, garden, cook and savor delicious food.
He was well loved and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, his brother Harold, his daughter Melissa Stephens, son-in-law Paul Stephens, and his two grandsons Jack and Benjamin Stephens.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Edwards the Confessor in Medfield this Saturday 11/2/19 at 10am, followed by a reception at Primavera Restaurant in Millis.
