Obituary for Elizabeth Ann "Betty" DeAngelis
Elizabeth Ann DeAngelis, “Betty” Age: 86
Elizabeth “Betty” DeAngelis passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8 at the Hunt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danvers MA. She was the daughter of George Smith Sr. and Elizabeth Smith (Small), sister of Claire Gould and George Smith Jr. Betty was predeceased by Charles DeAngelis whom she was married to for 65 years. Betty was always passionate about the needs of others, her generosity continuously radiated throughout her relationships and in turn, the community. Local children would flock to a Summer School camp created by Betty and her friend Jackie Murtagh at their young age of 12. Clearing a neighborhood pine grove and setting up homemade benches and tables, these children learned to read, do artwork and nature activities. This school had acquired 31 children by the end of its first summer. Graduating in 1952 from Millis High School, Betty held multiple class offices throughout her four year journey at Millis. She enjoyed playing sports such as basketball and was an avid football cheerleader. In 1951 the Millis high school football team broke a 23 year losing streak on Thanksgiving Day to arch rival Medway, winning 33-0. Betty often recalled what an honor it was to cheer at this monumental event. Upon graduation, Betty traveled to Florida to attend airline school but decided to return to her beloved hometown of Millis shortly before marrying Charles DeAngelis. Here they had their two sons, Charles Jr. and James DeAngelis. Betty was most happy helping others, and was truly passionate about keeping children safe as one of Millis’s original crossing guards. She would often bring children home who maybe had lost a ride or missed a bus. She is fondly remembered by students as a caring, compassionate individual who encouraged them to reach for the stars. Her legacy remains in Millis at Betty DeAngelis Way, leading to the Millis school grounds. She retired from the Millis Police Department as Crossing Guard and enjoyed spending time with her two Grandchildren, Marissa and Jackie DeAngelis. She spent time tending to her animals Brandy and Sandy, Charlies garden, and her beloved peach tree. Her love for her high school classmates excited her to help plan some epic high school class reunions. She was known by friends for being a good listener and confidant. Her love of the sunlight, ocean beaches and lighthouses has enthusiastically been embraced by her family. Betty leaves behind son Chuck DeAngelis and wife Cheryl of Cornish, NH and son James DeAngelis, wife Colleen, grandchildren Marissa and Jaclyn DeAngelis of New London NH. Her memory lives on through family and friends efforts with the Alzheimer's foundation of America.
