Of Medfield, passed away on February 11, 2020 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Dan was the much beloved husband of Jeanette Ruyle, the son of Leon and Neysa (Vinicor) Bibel, the brother of Elaine Bibel Cater, the devoted father of Malachi, Sarah and Jay, and the proud grandfather of Rowan and Wyatt. His family was Dan’s main joy and priority. While raising his children, he became an active member and lay leader in First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Medfield. History was a strong draw and Dan was very involved in both the Medfield Historical Society and the town Historic Commission.
Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey October 5, 1947, Dan grew up in South Brunswick Township on his parents’ chicken farm. His parents had come to this country as children from Eastern Europe, both their families fleeing anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire. Dan was not fond of chickens, so went on to study criminal justice at Northeastern University and made a career in that field.
Dan managed the Massachusetts State Police Crime Reporting Unit for 27 years, retiring in 2015. He was primarily responsible for collecting, processing, analyzing and disseminating crime data to the FBI for over 300 state and local police agencies in Massachusetts. His last assignment was with the State Police Commonwealth Fusion Center where his knowledge of crime data was used to examine statewide crime trends. He became a national expert in crime statistics, co-authoring numerous professional publications on crime data and its utility for crime control policy. He was passionate about enhancing the data quality of crime statistics throughout the state and worked tirelessly on improving reporting rates and assisting municipalities with data reporting implementation.
His family deeply thanks the staff of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Hospice Program of the Visiting Nurses Association for the excellent and devoted care they gave to Dan.
DUE TO THE CURRENT SITUATION, the Memorial Service will be postponed. A new Memorial Service we be announced at a later date.
