Obituary for Douglas Arthur DeDoming Sr.

Douglas A. DeDoming, Sr., age 89, a longtime resident of Millis, passed peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, November 11, 2020. From the Needham-Newton area, he is the son of the late Howard C. DeDoming, Sr. and the late Nancy N. (Marshall) DeDoming. He was an active member of the community and a patriot. Doug was very proud of his military service. He distinguished himself with service to his country by enlisting in the United States Army in June of 1950. During this time, he reached the rank of Corporal, and he received 2 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was also the recipient of the “Ambassador For Peace” official proclamation from the people of The Republic of Korea, and many other recognitions of his service.

Doug was a member of the American Legion Post 208, the Disabled American Veterans, and one of the founding members of the Millis Amvets. He volunteered his time in many fundraising efforts and other community-based activities.

His work career was spent mostly at Genalco, Inc., as a Sales Representative for Heavy Equipment and Contractor Supplies.

Both Doug’s and his wife’s families grew up together as neighbors as their mothers were best friends. Throughout their courtship and marriage, they shared a love for dancing. They attended the dance halls where the Big Bands played and later in life, they became the “King and Queen” of the Do-Si Doers Square Dance Club. He was a proud family man and loved the time spent during vacations at Brant Rock, family cookouts, boating and fishing trips. Coincidentally, Doug proposed to Vera while they were fishing. He was known to never leave the house without his harmonica and could turn any backyard cookout into a singalong.

Douglas was the beloved husband of Vera F. (Sobey) DeDoming, who predeceased him in June of 2011. He was the devoted father of Douglas DeDoming Jr. of Medway, Linda Smith and her husband Bob of Franklin, Wendy O’Neill and her late husband Danny of Medway, Sandra Fairfield and her husband Ed of Millis, Shelley Truett and her husband Chuck of Uxbridge, and Rene DeDoming of Millis. Douglas is survived by his sister, Liell Evans and his brother-in-law, Sterling Sobey, but was sadly preceded in death by his other siblings Howard DeDoming, Anita Tetreault, Nancy Corbett, Shirley Hedderig, Marcella DiDonato, Laura Sobey, Margaret Burke, Daniel Sobey and Judith Clark. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
