Obituary for Douglas H. "Doug" Morse
Douglas H. Morse, age 64, of Uxbridge, formerly of Medfield and Millis, died suddenly on October 24th during his birthday celebration at his daughter’s home in Plainville. Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Linda (Shaw) Morse and his loving daughters Catherine Morse Kaliszewski and her husband Matthew and Lauren Morse and her fiancé David Kellner. Also surviving Doug are his siblings Ellen (Morse) Cohen and her husband Jeff, Charles Morse and his wife Elizabeth, David Morse and his wife Kathleen. Doug also leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews and three great nephews. Doug was the son of the late Charles and Frances (Copithorne) Morse of Medfield.
Doug attended Medfield schools and graduated from Medfield High School in 1973. Like many other young adults in the town, he worked at Lords for several years. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, later joining the Air Force in 1975. During the summer of 1972, he met his wife Linda who was then a high school freshman and they wed in May 1976 and moved to Great Falls, Montana where Doug was a nuclear missile mechanic at Malmstrom Air Force Base. Moving back to Medfield, Doug completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering graduating in 1984 summa cum laude from Northeastern University. Moving to Syracuse, NY, Doug began his career at Carrier Transicold specializing in refrigeration units, eventually earning patents. It was important to Doug that rather than use his engineering skills to support the defense industry, he wanted to create better ways to ship food across the country. In 1987 with his wife and young daughters Cathy and Laurie, he helped open a new Carrier Transicold plant in Athens, Georgia putting his engineering skills towards not only creating a massive engineering lab, but also serving as a mentor to many engineers who say they still use the skills that Doug taught them. As one of his engineering friends said today, Doug was the best engineer he had ever met and a wonderful friend. While in Georgia, Doug volunteered his time to be the liaison between their church in Athens and the contractors to build a nearly million dollar addition to the building. Moving back to Millis, Doug continued his engineering career and was currently employed by IPG Photonics in Oxford, MA
Doug loved spending time with his family, playing guitar when his daughters were small so they could sing and dance in the living room. Doug proudly attended many ballet recitals, Girl Scout ceremonies and musical performances of his daughters and he celebrated every achievement with great pride as they grew into young women. He spent many hours bicycling with friends while in Georgia and upon moving back to Massachusetts became active in the choir at the Millis United Church of Christ. Doug was a huge fan of the Patriots and the Bruins and had recently started a new hobby of race car driving online. Doug enjoyed many other hobbies over the years including remote controlled planes, kites, softball, traveling, cooking for his family, and always music. Doug’s true love was spending time with his wife, children and his extended family. Doug and Linda celebrated their 40th anniversary with a trip to England and Doug climbed up every staircase in all the castles! He also particularly enjoyed traveling throughout Oregon and visiting Linda’s aunt and uncle residing there. Doug’s support and pride of Linda’s academic and career achievements was boundless and a gift she will never be able to repay.

Calling hours will be from 4–7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 at Roberts-Mitchell-Caruso Funeral Home in Medfield, Massachusetts and a celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 4th at 11 a.m. at the Medfield Vine Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your community’s local food pantry.
