Emily Ann Greenwood, 95, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, May 22 with her family at her bedside in Westwood, MA. She was the widow of David Greenwood, with whom she shared 56 years of a happy and loving marriage.
Born and raised in Chattanooga, TN, she was the daughter of Emil and Katherine Davis, and the sister of Edward, Jim and Bill Davis and Betty Coulter. She graduated from the University of Chattanooga and worked as an elementary school teacher before moving to New York City to work for Eastern Airlines. She was romantically courted by the love of her life for eighteen months before they married in 1954.
They lived in Albany, Endicott and Pittsburgh before settling down in New Canaan, CT where they raised their five children. They retired to Isle of Palms, SC in 1998 and then returned to New England in 2007 to be closer to family.
Emily Ann was a warm, loving, and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She easily developed friendships and cherished them forever. She loved to entertain and socialize and could always be spotted in the middle of the dance floor with her husband. Despite all her years up North, she never lost her Southern charm and elegance. She was known especially for her sense of humor and kindness to others.
She instilled in her children faith, humor, lightheartedness, independence and social etiquette. Never to put up with negativity from them, she would squelch it with comments like “Wasn’t it a beautiful day?” She took great pride in her matriarchal role, there was nothing more important than family and maintaining traditions. Every holiday was marked with a festive celebration around the dining room table. She cherished all the family gatherings on Long Beach Island, Chattanooga, Moorestown, Livingston, Wild Dunes, Maine and Outer Banks.
She was an avid gardener, cook and bridge player and ran many Bingo games with her grandkids. Emily stayed active with walks on the beach, tennis, golf, water aerobics and yoga. She was a woman of strong faith and a devout Catholic throughout her life. She was a member of St Aloysius parish in New Canaan and Stella Maris parish on Sullivan’s Island.
Her devotion to family and friends and sharing the joys of life will remain as her legacy. Her family will miss her very much.
Emily Ann is survived by her children, Kaye Tunney and husband Brion of Medfield, MA; Nancy Albertson and husband Tom of Rockport, Maine; David Greenwood Jr and wife Kristen of Medfield, MA; John Greenwood of Charlotte, NC and Suzanne Spence and husband Walter of Richmond, VA. Her legacy includes eleven grandchildren, John, Emily, Sarah, Meghan, Briana, Caroline, Bucky, Shawn, Charlotte, Paige and Lily, to whom she will be lovingly remembered as Grammie.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in New Canaan, CT where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
