Obituary for George Herbert Holmes

MILLIS: George Herbert Holmes of Millis and formerly of Walpole passed away with family by his side on April 20, 2019. He was 90 years old.

Born in Norfolk MA, he was the son of William H. Holmes and Idella G. (Wilson) Holmes. He was a giving man and always made himself available to those who needed him.

Beginning in 1946, George distinguished himself with service to his country in the Army, stationed in occupied Japan during World War II and became a member of the VFW in Walpole after his return. He was honored to have served his country.

George had many jobs but also owned his own businesses; a service station with store in Norfolk then a partnership taxi company in Walpole. He worked for many other companies including Kendall Mills, Millis Transportation as a truck driver and dispatcher, and finally H.P. Hood of Boston when a terrible auto accident forced him to retire early in 1986 at the age of 58.

In 1947 George met his beautiful bride Eleanor (Bissell) Holmes when they both worked at Kendall Mills, Walpole. They married in 1949 and started a family in Walpole but in 1952 purchased their home in Millis where they spent their marital life. His whole life he remained the devoted father of Janet Holmes of CT, Donald Holmes of Norfolk and companion Deborah Legge, Cheryl O’Malley and her husband James of Medfield, and Robert Holmes and wife Deborah of Norton. George is survived by his wife Eleanor and his sister Idella Yankee of RI and predeceased by older sister Ruth Sanders of Medway and brother William “Brody “Holmes of Norfolk. He loved his nine grandchildren: Jessica Carr and husband Tim, Charlene Thibodeau and husband John, Mark Holmes, Mike O’Malley and wife Jocelyn Scheintaub, Jennifer Gabriel and husband Daniel, Kaitlyn Holmes, Casey Holmes, Nancy Holmes and Bryan Holmes, and was also blessed with ten great grandchildren: Elijah, Michaela, Janelle, Elora, Jacob, Matthew, Emily, Justin, Nathaniel, and William.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Roberts Mitchell Caruso Funeral Home, 15 Miller St. Medfield MA on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 AM, followed by a full military honor burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Auburn Rd. Millis, MA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Friends of the Dwight-Derby House, 38 Pleasant Street, Medfield, MA. 02052.
