Obituary for George E. Sgourakes

Surrounded by his family, George Eustace Sgourakes of Millis passed away on Sunday, June 5. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Efstathios (Eustace) and Efstathia (Esther) (Dourou) Sgourakes and grew up in Dorchester. George attended Northeastern University for both his Bachelor of Science (1960) and Master of Science (1968) degrees. Following college graduation and marriage, George enlisted in the United States Army and served as a First Lieutenant in the 87th Engineer Battalion (1960-1962) and was based at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He spent his career as a mechanical engineer at Foxboro Company, and following an early retirement, went on to work at Waters Corporation. Of distinction, George is the holder of 28 patents.

George was a faithful parishioner at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston and previously at the Annunciation Cathedral in Boston, and along with his late wife, Sophia, lived a church-centered life with their family. He served in many roles at both parishes – from board member, Treasurer, Vice President, President, and Building and Grounds Chair. As a testament to their church involvement, George and Sophia are also past recipients of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston Ministry award. George was devoted to his family and especially to his wife Sophia who pre-deceased him by eight months; they were married for over sixty years. He was an inventor and master of repairs and always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. George leaves his daughters Amalia (and husband Isaac Machado) of Dorchester and Christine Skalkotos (and husband Demetrios) of Short Hills, New Jersey and four much-adored grandchildren -- Nikolas, Sophia, Marina, and Zachary, as well as many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his brother Constantine and his sister Helen Nestervich.

Funeral services will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 57 Brown Street in Weston on Monday, June 13 beginning at 9:30am with visiting hours, followed by funeral at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Iconography Fund https://www.stdemetriosweston.org/iconography .
