Obituary for Geraldine Colella (Shallcross)

Geraldine (Gerry) Anne Colella (Shallcross), 85 of Walpole, formerly of Medfield, MA passed away Wednesday, December 12th. She was the beloved wife of the late Ciriaco Colella. She was born in Boston, and grew up in Jamaica Plain. She was very proud of her “JP” heritage. She met the love of her life at Moseley’s Dance Hall in Dedham. Together they created a wonderful life for themselves and their family. She was totally devoted to her husband.

Gerry enjoyed the company of family and friends. She hosted many dinner parties with delicious food and drink. Often these parties finished with a game of cards, which she loved. She created a wonderful meal tradition for her family. Her children and daughter-in-law learned the art of cooking and hosting, and continue on this wonderful family tradition.

From her teenage summers in Newport, Gerry loved the beach. A perfect day for her was time spent on the beach with her grandchildren, finished off with cocktails, fried clams and laughter.

Gerry enjoyed her participation in the Medfield Red Hats, and was Secretary of the Hannah Adams club for many years. She also gave of her time and talent at her church, including serving as a Eucharistic Minister.

She was sharp as a tack right to the end. Gerry could complete a Sunday paper crossword puzzle faster than anybody we know. As a result she was a Scrabble champion, and a formidable Words with Friends opponent.

Gerry was very creative. She was an excellent knitter, creating many different types of clothing for family, friends and charities. She passed on her knitting skills to her daughter and others. She also created beautiful needle point works for each of her grandchildren, as well as traditional showings for her home.

Because of her husband’s gardening skills, she learned to be excellent canner, putting up many vegetables for family and friends. She also loved picking blueberries and strawberries with her grandchildren and making excellent jam.

Gerry shared her time, sharp wit and laughter with everyone she encountered. We’ll miss her. She is survived by three children, Anthony Colella and wife Sherry of Ashland, Paul Colella of Spencer, and Cara Schomp and husband Craig of Stow. She was the brother of the late Thomas Shallcross of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated for Gerry on Tuesday December 18, 2018 at 10:00 o’clock AM at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 133 Spring St. Medfield MA 02052 followed immediately by burial at Vine Lake Cemetery.
