Obituary for Howard Kane
Howard Norman Kane of Foxborough, formerly of Medfield, died at The Doolittle Retirement Home on May 31, 2019. He was a longtime resident, there for 20 years. He was the husband of Dorothy (Johnson) Kane, his wife of 67 years. They were married at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Medfield on December 27, 1941. Born in West New York, New Jersey, he was the son of Frank and Mary (Coughlin) Kane. He was educated in the public schools of Bloomfield, New Jersey. He later continued on to earn a degree in electrical engineering and his MBA from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
During WW II, he served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Newfoundland Base Headquarters at St. John’s, with the 21st Signal Service Company. They constructed extensive telephone lines and equipment throughout the island. Following the war, he settled in Medfield and was employed with the New England Electric System (now National Grid), before retiring after 36 years. Howard was a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and a member of the IEEE.
From December 1993 until June 1999, he and Dorothy resided in Beatrice, Nebraska. There he enjoyed visiting with family, golfing and playing cards. He could usually be found at the library, both reading and walking their track.
Throughout the years, he and Dorothy pursued an avid interest in travel. Including Hawaii, they visited all the continental United States, Canada, the U.K. and Scandinavian countries. He loved spending his summer vacations with his family camping. They enjoyed ballroom and square dancing for 30 years and were founding members of the Medfield Scrabble Eights Square Dance Club. He also spent time playing golf, walking, reading, and genealogy. Howard was active in the Medfield Unitarian Church and served on various committees over the years. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Charles River Lodge, AF&AM, Medway, Massachusetts.
He is survived by daughter, Linda Terpak, granddaughter Julie Trout and two great granddaughters Taylor and Katie Trout all of Omaha. Also, seven nieces and seven nephews. He outlived his three brothers: James, Thomas and Arthur: and his sister, Linore Halsey.
The service will be held at Roberts Mitchell Caruso Funeral Home in Medfield on Monday, June 10, at 11 a.m.; with 1 hour visitation preceding then service. Donations may be made to Medfield Home Committee, 459 main Street, Medfield, MA 02052 or Doolittle Home, 16 Bird Street, Foxboro, MA 02035.
