Obituary for Joan McCombs (Vasek)

86, of Medfield, passed away unexpectedly on September 14, 2022. Joanie was known for her warmth and kindness, and ability to listen to the cares and needs of others, always with love in her heart.

Joan Marie Vasek was born on February 1, 1936, in Bedford, Ohio to Frank J. and Florence K. Vasek. She graduated from Maple Heights High School and St. John’s University. In high school she was a member of the “Slick Chicks” and known as “Tootsie.” While a registered nurse at the Cleveland Clinic she met Dr. H. Louis McCombs. They married in 1959 in Maple Heights, Ohio and then moved to the Boston area for Lou to complete his medical residency. In her later career, Joanie served as a nurse at Leonard Morse Metro-West Hospital in Natick, where she lovingly cared for cancer patients and made lifelong friends.

Joanie experienced much joy in retirement at her farm in Medfield. She deeply cared about her “farm family” as well as her rescue miniature donkey Gracie, pet chickens, and honeybees.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Frank Vasek, and sisters Rita Healy and Sally Vasek. She is survived by her son David Louis McCombs and wife Susan of Dallas, Texas; daughter Elizabeth (Beth) McCombs Westvold and husband Scott of Weston; daughter Dr. Sarah (Sally) McCombs Scott and husband Zachary of Missoula, Montana; grandchildren Leslie McCombs Roussev (Ivan), Emily McCombs Frisby (Taylor), Sarah Joan Westvold, Scott Harrison Westvold, Timothy Louis Scott, and Catherine Elizabeth Scott; and great-grandchildren Sloane Elizabeth Roussev, Claire Brooks Roussev, and Haiden Mattie Frisby.
