Obituary for Joseph E Ryan

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Edward Ryan, age 98. He was an exemplary man, son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle & friend.

“Joe”, “Big Mutt”, “Jiggy”, “Papa Joe” & “Bampy”, just a few names he was called by loved ones, passed away peacefully on Saturday (July 30, 2022) in his beloved hometown of Medfield. To all who knew him, Joe was a source of strength and courage, kindness and laughter, love and devotion and while his physical presence will be missed, his memory, spirit and lust for life will remain with us forever.

Joe nourished people with his love of music and dancing. “Lets get Jiggy.” He loved working outdoors, especially on his grandparents farm in Little Compton, Rhode Island.

Joe was born July 21, 1924 to Francis and Helena (Cotta) Ryan. His brother Francis joined their family two years later.

In May of 1943, before graduating high school, Joe was drafted in to the US Navy. He served his country aboard the USS Canberra. It took another 60 years before he & other WW11 veterans from Medfield proudly received their high school diplomas with the class of 2003. While in the navy Joe served his country aboard the USS Canberra. When Joe got out of the Navy he became a firefighter in 1947 & served 42 years for the town of Medfield. The last 18 years of his career was as the Fire Chief.

Joe was married to his beautiful wife Norma (Dewar) for 39 years until her passing in 1991.

Joe leaves behind his son Timothy and his son in law Michael Godjikian (who recently passed away on 6/9/22), his daughter Patricia Gertner and husband Bob, & his son John, his granddaughter Julie Steinkrauss & her husband William, his granddaughter Sarah Silva & her husband Greg, many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral mass will be held August 4th at St Edwards Catholic Church, 133 Spring St, Medfield at 10:00 am.
