Obituary for Kenneth J. Dorn III

Ken Dorn, aged 73 of Medfield died Friday July 30th with his wife Ginny at his side.

Ken was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and lived in Oregon before the family moved back to the east coast to Connecticut, eventually moving to and living in Needham, MA.

He attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and Hartt College of Music. He played semi-professional saxophone in the classical, jazz, and R&B styles. His taste in music was broad & eclectic. He also graduated from Suffolk University (Summa Cum Laude) with a degree in accounting and received his MBA from Babson College.

Ken was passionate about his businesses and his cooking. He began Dorn Publications over 50 years ago and gave many young saxophonist's their start. He wrote and published Multiphonics for saxophone, which became a standard for all saxophone players, especially jazz musicians. He also published two magazines, Saxophone Journal for 38 years and Jazz Player for 15 years. He published many original works and transcribed works for the saxophone as well.

Ken was a student of everything he took on. He began his cooking adventure about 25 years ago and studied various regional cooking styles, blending of flavors and spices, and could make the simplest dish delectable. He loved to cook for friends and family, always hoping to open up new flavors to them.

He loved to watch baseball and the Red Sox. He especially loved watching the finesse of every pitch thrown. He & Ginny enjoyed watching the Patriots too, but he really enjoyed trading game day meal preparations with his brother John.

Ken lived for our annual vacation to Martha's Vineyard, a tradition we began 25 years ago. The last few years sharing that time with family as well. He also loved his cats, Salem, Jersey & Phoenix.

Ken leaves behind is beloved wife of 41 years, Ginny (Vasil) Dorn. He is also survived by his brother John Dorn and his wife Judy and their children Kelsie & Christopher of E. Sandwich, MA, his sister Debbie (Dorn) Counter and her husband George and their children Sam, Beth, Heather, and Kailey of Waynesboro, VA, and Marguerite Dorn of Boston, MA.
