Obituary for Marjorie H. McCarter (Mannino)

Marjorie Howard McCarter passed away peacefully after a long period of declining health on May 24, 2022 at the Newbridge on the Charles Assisted Living facility in Dedham MA. She married her husband, Douglas H. McCarter on March 28, 1953, and they were married for 67 years when Douglas passed away on April 4, 2020.

Marjorie was born in Boston, MA on June 1, 1931. She graduated from West Roxbury High School and New England Deaconess School of Nursing with an associate degree in Nursing. She worked at Glover Memorial Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess) in Needham, MA as an R.N. until her growing family necessitated spending more time at home to raise their four children.

Marjorie had one sister, Alice (Mannino) Ernst who passed away in February of 2021. Marjorie and (Douglas) were the proud and devoted parents of Kenneth H. McCarter of Bellingham, MA., Donald H. McCarter of Pocasset, MA and Cape Coral, FL., Deborah E. McCarter of Goffstown, NH, and the late Robert D. McCarter. She was the loving mother-in-law to Susan (Benson) McCarter, Diane (MacDonald) McCarter and Lynn (Landry) McCarter. She was also the delighted grandmother to Sarah McCarter of Plattsburgh, NY, Amy Mondello of Wrentham, MA, Kaitlyn Waldron of N. Berwick, ME, Brian McCarter of Boston, MA, Michelle Kelsey of Wakefield, MA, Daniel Buck of Manchester, NH and Rebecca Spaulding of Manchester ,NH. She also has 3 great grandchildren, Gabriella Mondello of Wrentham, MA, Malcolm Waldron of N. Berwick, ME, and Piper Kelsey of Wakefield MA.

Marjorie was a very active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Millis, Ma. for over 50 years serving on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Search Committee and Churchwomen. She made countless batches of butterscotch brownies for coffee hours over these years, much to her children’s delight.

Marjorie’s skills complemented Douglas’ building and carpentry skills. She assisted Douglas in the family construction business in an inside administrative role or she could be seen rolling up to a job site with a load of lumber or roof shingles. She was also a frequent visitor at the Millis landfill with a loaded truck of construction debris until her sons were able to drive. She faithfully prepared Doug’s lunch, two coffee-break snacks and thermoses of drinks every single workday and placed them in his “lunch pail”-a dented 5-gallon bucket.

Marjorie was active in the International Order of Rainbow for girls, serving as Mother Advisor in W. Medway Assembly #63, MA and was a loving advisor and mentor for many teenage girls who still refer her as Mom McCarter. She served as a Grand Deputy in Massachusetts for many years and even was known to fill in as the Rainbow Camp nurse. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, an affiliated organization.

Marjorie loved to travel with her husband, and enjoyed extended trips to Australia, New Zealand, China, Thailand, Africa and many train and car trips in the United States. Once Douglas indicated he was interested in taking a vacation, she made the travel plans the second he left for work! When at home, she liked to swim daily at the Needham YMCA and could be seen doing her laps in the pool.

Marjorie passed down family recipes from her father, Joseph Mannino which included meatballs, turkey stuffing and lentil stew. As Joseph never wrote anything down each recipe was open to variation by the cook. She cooked many a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner which included the largest turkey Adrian Collins could provide from Outpost Farm. All were welcome to these dinners so there could be a houseful but there was always plenty of leftovers and turkey sandwiches for those very few still hungry.

Marjorie never looked for the spotlight and preferred to operate as a partner to Douglas in their 60+ year marriage. Her personality and intellect complemented Doug’s drive, work ethic and straight-forward approach.

There will be no visiting hours as per her request. A memorial service will be held to honor both Douglas and Marjorie, on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 11:30 AM, at Roberts Mitchell Caruso Funeral Home, 15 Miller St., Medfield, MA 02052. All are welcome to attend. Consistent with her wishes, the burial will be a private family gathering only.

Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
