Miriam Matthews Fawcett
Of Medfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in her home on June 12, 2020. Beloved wife of 66 years to John W. Fawcett, Jr. Miriam is survived by her children John, Linda, Julie, and Tom; and her grandchildren Matthew, Michael, Zachariah, and Christina.
Miriam was born in Hemingway, South Carolina to Earl and Miriam Grace (Hill) Matthews on January 17, 1931. One of 12 children: Charlie, Tom, Ulmer, James, Mary Ellen, Olive, John Lewis, Janie Bell, Larry, Jerry, and Linda –Miriam had a lively upbringing to say the least! Much to everyone’s delight, Miriam loved to share stories with family and friends of her childhood and loving family.
Active in the community, Miriam belonged to the Medfield Garden Club and the Hannah Adams Woman’s Club. An avid Contract Bridge player, Miriam and her adoring husband thoroughly enjoyed hosting and joining many Bridge parties. Later in life, Miriam enjoyed playing Bridge with friends at the Medfield Senior Center. Miriam’s passion was also shown in her love of birding and gardening.
Miriam graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree and was awarded the Order of the Pearl (65 years) by her Delta Zeta Sorority sisters.
Some of Miriam’s greatest memories were of her work at Boston University’s Center for English Language and Orientation program (CELOP). As part of the Senior Administration and Budget Director, Miriam had a very full plate of duties but she always delighted in taking the time to help students. Whether it was a housing, visa, financial or other administrative issue –Miriam would drop everything to guide and assist “her” students. Additionally, Miriam and John periodically had living at their home for the entire 12 to 14 week session, several foreign exchange students from the countries of Bahrain and Turkey. Miriam and John treated each like family and gave them a flavor of the United States and the English language that they cherished.
Miriam was thoroughly loved by the faculty, administration and students. At her retirement party, a vast number of administrators, teachers, and students gave her a fond farewell.
