Obituary for Rose Marie Vanasse (Connor)

Rose Marie (Connor)Vanasse, age 89, passed away Monday, August 7, 2023 at Traditions (Reflections) of Dedham, Massachusetts. Rose Marie was an amazing Mother, Wife, Sister, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Registered Nurse.

Born December 14, 1933, in Freeland, Pennsylvania, to Regina (Boyle) and Kenneth Connor.

Rose Marie attended Mercy School of Nursing in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and graduated as a Registered Nurse. She began her career as a surgical nurse in Pennsylvania's Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital System.

Rose Marie married Robert (Bob) Thomas Vanasse in 1959. She relocated to Ansonia, Connecticut where she started her family and soon after moved to Trumbull, Connecticut, and continued to expand her family and raise her four children. She and Bob were devout Catholics and very active at Saint Catherine of Siena church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister, Church Ladies Guild member and played an active role in the parish Home School Association that helped fund and start the school in 1965 that her four children attended. Their social lives revolved around the church, and they enjoyed frequent church socials and dances and made strong friendships in their church community. While raising her four children, Rose Marie was the Nurse Manager of inpatient students at Yale University Hillhouse Health Center in New Haven, Connecticut. She worked nights for many years so she could be with her children after school and somehow managed to be the girl scout leader, room parent, taxi driver, and cheerleader for her children’s busy sports and after-school activities. While petite in size, Rose Marie was a force to be reckoned with! She was a very hard worker, always spoke her mind, and was a fierce protector of those she loved.

As her children got older, she gave up her night shifts and became Director of the Health Center at the University of Bridgeport. She ended her nursing career at the Tandet Center in Stamford Hospital as Head Nurse of the Alzheimer Unit.  In 1992, Rose Marie and Bob happily retired to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, spending summers at Eastman Lake in New Hampshire.

Rose Marie, also known as ‘Sis’, loved painting, reading, traveling, and spending time with her children and their families. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She cherished reading with them and was always up for a puzzle or a game. She was the loving mother and mother-in-law of Robert and Kathleen Vanasse (Westwood, Massachusetts), Anne Marie and Dr. Michael Paidas (Coral Gables, Florida), Elaine and Anthony DeLuca (Medfield, Massachusetts), and Tricia and James Buzgo (Medfield, Massachusetts). She was the cherished grandmother, also known as “RaRa”, of John (Katherine) Vanasse and Katherine (Scott) Kingsley, Nicholas (Jessica) and Lauren Paidas, Justin and Madison DeLuca and Hannah and Grace Buzgo; great grandmother of Jack Robert Vanasse and James Vanasse Kingsley. Rose Marie is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; grandson, Andrew DeLuca; and her brother, James Connor.
