Obituary for Samuel "Sam" Dowd

Samuel Joseph Dowd passed away unexpectedly on January 8, 2020 at 42 years old. Sam was the beloved son of Henry G. Dowd Jr. and Cynthia J. (Pratt) Dowd, and he was the greatest dad to Lilly Hanna Dowd and Jacob Brumit Dowd. He is survived by the mother of his children, Jennifer Dowd. Sam leaves behind his brother Nick Dowd and his wife Shannon, and his sister Emily (Dowd) Callahan and her husband Brian and their children, Owen and Graham Callahan. In addition, he also leaves behind his large extended family and many, many wonderful friends.

Sam grew up in Dover, MA and attended the Dover-Sherborn Public Schools, where he enjoyed soccer, cross country skiing, and baseball. Sam was a Boy Scout and an active member of the Dover Church Youth Group. He had a love for nature and any outdoor activity. He particularly loved to go hiking, camping, and fishing. Sam loved live music and concerts. He had a passion for being barefoot while enjoying a Grateful Dead concert. And, he was very proud of his 18 years of continuous sobriety in A.A.

Sam’s love of people and old-soul wisdom started at a very young age. By five years-old, he knew every fire, police, and highway department employee by their first names. This circle of friends just continued growing throughout his life. He always treated his friends like family and in return he became the honorary member of many other families. Sam would do anything for his friends and family.

Jake and Lilly were Sam’s greatest joy and source of pride. When not coaching them in sports, he was always there, as their biggest fan. His passion and enormous heart were evident in everything he did, especially his children. These qualities have been forever instilled in his children. Sam is impossible to forget. We miss him deeply and always will.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 14th 4:00-8:00PM at the Roberts Mitchell Caruso Funeral Home in Millis.
