Obituary for Shirley Ruth Sullivan

Shirley R. Sullivan of Medfield, MA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Born in Boston, Shirley was raised in Lowell by her mother, Madeleine (Major) Belanger, and her grandparents, Harry Major and Lillian (Corey) Major. Shirley often talked of her grandfather’s farm and gardens in Lowell, and as an adult, she was a long-time member of the Medfield Garden Club. She spent many happy hours working in her garden, first on Pleasant Court and later on Nebo Street, a hobby she passed on to her children. Shirley graduated from Medford High School with a diploma in Fine Arts, and worked at Sears, a job she held through the years of World War II. She met Charlie Sullivan, a Marine veteran of World War II, at Sears, and they were married in 1949. The couple lived in Allston before moving to Medfield in 1952, where they raised their four children, Chuck, Scott, Chris, and Nancy. Shirley was a wonderful and loving mother and instilled confidence, a sense of humor and compassion in her children. She was also an accomplished artist who loved to point out the color, shape, sound and movement of things she noticed in her everyday life. Shirley was a Sunday School teacher at the Baptist Church, and in addition to the Garden Club, was a volunteer at the Medfield Food Cupboard and a member of the Hannah Adams Woman’s Club. After her children were grown, Shirley became a preschool teacher, and enjoyed her years at the Medfield Children’s Center, then run by Ann York and Peggy Joyce. Shirley lived a long and full life, and she will be missed tremendously by her family, including her children and their families: Chuck and his wife Donna (Norton) of Sedona, Arizona, Scott and his wife Faith (Welton) of Medfield, Chris and her husband Walter Paal of Franklin and Nancy and her husband Neal Sullivan of Medfield. She will also be missed by her friends in Medfield, including Bob and Joan Wood, her long-time neighbors, and her many nieces and nephews including her sister’s children James Swallow and Nancy Mazza.
