Obituary for Tatiana Bastanier

Tatiana “Mamo” Bastanier, January 25, 1917 to December 21, 2018, lived with a determined and positive spirit. Known for her wit and lack of filter in expressing her feelings, she made fast and long friendships filled with both humor and intensity, and was loved deeply by her family. Tatiana passed on in peace the afternoon of December 21 surrounded by her family and closest friends, just a month shy of her 102nd birthday.
Born in Harbin, China in 1917, she lived a life like a novel. She navigated many significant world events throughout her life with grace and resilience. Tatiana met her husband, Walter Bastanier, in Shanghai. They had their daughter, Jeanne, before emigrating from China at the start of the Cultural Revolution. Tatiana, Walter and Jeanne moved to Brazil, Canada and eventually the United States.
Mamo valued her family traditions remembered from her childhood and passed them along both to her daughter and her grandchildren. She cared deeply about the value of handcrafted items and nature and felt lucky to have both her husband and daughter be exceptionally skilled in art, crafts and woodworking. Together they created a lovely and unique home. Over the course of 50+ years, Mamo established an aesthetically impressive yard which she maintained with precision and care. In her later years, this became her refuge.
Her spirit is carried on by her loving daughter, Jeanne Bastanier Sullivan and her husband Jim, her three beloved grandchildren, Tamara and her husband Rob, Alexandra “Pandi” and her husband Tim, Nick and his wife Nancy, and her cherished great-grandchildren, Annika and Lukas.
Mamo, as she was known, would tell us to honor her life by enjoying a moment in every day. Memorial donations can be made to New Life Furniture Bank of MA, P.O. Box 573, Medfield, MA 02052.
